Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul. It comprises numerous subsidiaries and affiliated businesses, most of them united under the Samsung brand, and is the largest South Korean business conglomerate. Prajakta Kulkarni shares her internship experience at Samsung Research and Development Institute, Bangalore.
‘Samsung’, the name itself kindles curiosity, thrill and excitement! There’s a curiosity to know what goes behind the making of the coolest electronic gadgets, a thrill of facing the challenge of cracking the tests and an excitement to work with that one dream tech brand, ‘Samsung’! The same happened with us. We were excited and nervous. It was after being vigorously tested by a time-constrained aptitude test, a coding challenge and a group discussion that we were finally selected to intern at Samsung Research Institute, Bangalore!
The first week we were stationed at a luxurious hotel, where our orientation took place. The orientation process was a ‘learning with fun’ process where informative lectures were interleaved with fun-filled activities that we played in groups under the leadership of our team-wise elected captains. On the last day of induction, we were assigned projects and this is when we got a feeling, “Yes, I’m actually going to work for Samsung”, a moment to be felt! Believe me, this was just the start of a very eventful journey!
On the first day, we were given identity cards of Samsung, the id-cards that we proudly wore for the next few weeks. Then we were assigned jobs and we started working. Each of us was also assigned a buddy who would be there if we faced any issues. Initially I had research-based work and I was excited to do it as I had been imagining myself as an ‘R&D intern’ ever since I got selected! So, after one or two weeks of studying, understanding and absorbing stuff, I started with the execution part, which was equally challenging and brain-teasing. I would enjoy my work and also the occasional visits to the awesome theme rooms and the cafeteria for a cup of coffee with my team mates.
During the orientation we were also informed of a coding test which was to be held at the end of the internship period. We started studying for it and attending the training sessions that were being conducted for helping us with the preparation for the test. This provided us with an opportunity to sharpen our coding skills before the placement season got competed and study at the same time, with the brightest students from colleges all around the country! We got to interact with them, learn from them newer and better coding practices and approaches to problem-solving. We got a glimpse of the engineering education and college life in other universities. We had a very good time there, working together, making new friends, getting to know their way of life and sharing with them ours!
The last week held the coding test, followed by personal interviews. It also held an interesting element, the ‘Interns’ day’ to which we had been looking forward since the orientation, when we were told of it. There were singing and dancing performances, games and a number of fun events. We got to see some of the best professional dance groups perform, who were specially invited for us! Then there was a beat boxer who very interactively entertained us with his extraordinary talent. This was followed by an awesome DJ and thus was celebrated the ‘Interns’ day’ that made us feel really special and valued by Samsung.
I can write a lot more about the great work culture there, the fun we had, the co-operative and supportive mentors and managers who help you feel at home and the open and friendly atmosphere. But to sum up, I really enjoyed my time there and am sure each of the interns will share my feelings. We learnt so much, got an insight into what it is to be working in the corporate sector and gained knowledge that our text-books could have never ever given us! I value each moment of this amazing experience and owe it all to Samsung! Thank you a lot Samsung!
