I was fortunate to be among the five who were selected for the internship provided by one of the most coveted companies Goldman Sachs. Technology role at an Investment Bank means that one applies his/her technical skills to support financial services. For the 2 months that I was at Goldman, I was a part of the Financial Controller's Technology division. Other interns from VJTI were in Operations, Firmwide Services and Private Wealth Management Technology. To facilitate our induction into the company, interns were given seminars on the functions of the various business units of the firm. This helped me gain a holistic view of the company.
The projects assigned were largely determined by the manager one worked under. I was assigned projects that involved enhancing the console framework used by the developers in the team to create regulatory and financial accounting applications, creating a training tool for the new employees in the team to help them get a feel of the frameworks and the processes and enhancing a process model for collecting, analyzing and storing the company’s trade and valuation information.
The technologies I worked on were JAVA, Swing, XML and JUnit Testing. Luckily, I was not expected know these technologies as they were to be learnt on the job. Thus, I spent my first week becoming familiar with these technologies and applied them over the course of the next few weeks. The working environment was extremely congenial as all my team members were extremely enthusiastic in helping me overcome any difficulty. The weekly feedback sessions with my manager were an added bonus as they provided constructive advice that allowed me to further improve my work and meet my project deadlines. [.......]
