Third year is the time when all students are scurrying to find some sort of internship. I was extremely lucky to get an internship as a Project Trainee at Tata Consultancy Services. Securing an internship from any other medium apart from campus internship programs is quite difficult. The easiest, although not the most reliable way to go about it is asking someone in the company you want to intern to forward your resume and an impressive cover letter to the H.R. of their department. They can in turn forward it to whomsoever concerned. This is the route I took. Luckily, I got a call from Tata Consultancy Services asking me to come and appear for an aptitude test. After clearing that stage I was required to complete other joining formalities.
I was assigned a project known as Global Insurance Pool which was a tool for Actuaries to calculate premiums based on the data subjected to different indicators. I was required to code parts of the project and design databases for the same. An extremely important thing to establish at start of an internship which is not part of an internship program is-A Mentor. This is extremely important as initially it is much easier to acclimatize and there is always someone you can go to time and again for help and feedback as he is fully aware of everything from start to finish. If there is a gap of sometime before you start your internship it would be a good idea to enquire about the technologies required on the project so as to not waste time learning them during the internship period. [......]
Having said this, I learnt the technologies required for the first 2 weeks. My mentor luckily, was non-assuming, extremely helpful and enthusiastic. He constantly gave me feedback and constructive criticism. To make the most of your internship it is extremely important to have your eyes and ears open at all times and ask as many questions as possible. This helps you to get an insight into the workings of the company. Networking, though not important in the kind of internship I went for, always helps. It is imperative to have the Email-Id of the H.R. of your account and the contact nos. of your mentor, and someone from the senior management.
Although the seven week period was extremely intense, it was indented with a lot of fun too. There were always office parties, and birthdays and different events organized which made it an extremely enjoyable experience.
It is definitely a no- brainer to do an internship but is extremely vital to do it in an area of your specific interest. It is beneficial to do it during your third year as we are more familiar with different technologies. Overall, I gained a lot in terms of technical skills and tremendous amount of exposure in acquiring a holistic view in the workings of a huge corporate giant like TCS. It was something no textbook could have taught me. This internship was not only a valuable experience but critical in helping me determine the path I wanted take after my graduation.
