Ugam is a global leader in data and analytics that helps retailers, brands and market research firms transform big data into valuable insights. Jagannathan Iyengar shares his internship experience at Ugam Solutions from May 2017 to July 2017.
November 2016 is when Ugam Solutions came to VJTI to recruit students for internship. That is how my journey as a “Consultant(Analytics Services)” began. I secured a 2-month summer internship at their Bengaluru office. Ugam is a data analytics firm that uses big data to provide intelligent insights and services to its clients. Being an Indian company, it is headquartered in Mumbai and has offices around the globe.
The initial work might have seemed quotidian but it was imperative for us to understand the existing process in order to devise an optimized, automated version of the same. Reality check : data analytics is no sinecure. It has its fair share of hard labor. Once we moved on to the technological implementation of our ideas, work was fast-paced. We implemented a neural network in Python for classifying certain chunks of data. We had to query databases using SQL to retrieve the data required for training and testing the models that relied on learning algorithms. Since we were a team of 4 members, several other concomitant aspects of work - discussing, with Ugamites, the possibilities of using technologies developed for other projects in ours, documenting the work in order to facilitate development of our code after the completion of our internship, preparing the value proposition for our project - kept me and the team occupied.
The able leadership of our managers and timely review meetings ensured the completion of the project before the deadline. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to intern at a firm that wholeheartedly embraced the Silicon Valley culture : approachable senior management, casual dress code, flexible timings and a steep learning curve that saw me delve into machine learning - a field I had no practical experience in prior to this internship. Having interned at 2 different companies over the past year, my sincere advice to all youngsters out there scourging for internships would be to shed all prior inhibitions and be receptive to new ideas from everyone. The professional contacts you establish during your stints at corporates/ startups/ institutes would prove vital at different points of your career. Patience is the key to experiencing the real impact of your work. Expand your network and have fun learning novel technologies and concepts in a short period of time. A period of tremendous growth and opportunities awaits you!
