Getting an experience of a corporate world before getting out of college is one of the greatest experiences a student can have. I was lucky enough to get a summer internship in my third year at Black & Veatch. I was interning in the mechanical department of water section which is located in Powai, Mumbai.
In the beginning, I was completely clueless about what I had to do as an intern, but as soon as I joined, I was allotted a mentor who helped me throughout my internship program and made sure that I was comfortable in this new environment. This internship was more related to piping engineering, and as I had taken piping as my elective subject in the sixth semester, it was easier for me to get familiar with the work. In my course, I was assigned three topics which were designing of a Pump, Piping Design, and Material Selection of a pipe. I learnt how to read a P&ID, GA drawings and PFDs. At the end of my internship, I had successfully designed a pump and made a piping structure for a desalination plant. I also got familiarized with some new softwares during this internship. It was a very good learning experience as I could use my technical knowledge and apply it practically.
At the end of this internship I realized that apart from improving my technical skills this internship has helped me choose my field and has shown my strength and developing areas. So I would suggest everyone to do an internship in any field as somehow it will definitely help you.
