Welspun started the official Textile GET - Interns program in 2018, I was lucky to be selected amongst textile students from all over the country. The first phase of the journey was cracking the Group Discussions and Personal Interviews. I feel the key to cracking Personal Interviews is being confident about your knowledge and skills, but not over-confident, as that is usually a turn-off for the HR. A decent CGPA and impressive extra-curriculars also help!
The internship was at the Terry Towel Plant in Vapi, Gujarat. The first two-days consisted of an induction process where we were given detailed information about the various businesses of Welspun, their values, missions and targets. We were also guided by the senior leadership about what they expect from us in the month-long internship process. I was very impressed by the entire process, especially their attention to detail, and our entire journey was planned to a T. We had extremely supportive mentors.
Every person was allotted a different project topic, and they expected us to come up with out-of-the-box solutions and give them an outsider view to help them improve! I was in the Product Development Department and the topic given to me was ‘Comparative Analysis between Terry Towels made of Twisted and Twist less Pile Yarn’. I had to identify and quantify how one of their products matched up against the other especially from the customer’s point of view. The best part was that we were given the flexibility to work in our own way; there weren’t any specific pointers. We had access to the mentors and labs but the rest was up to us. Researching, experimenting and quantifying the results in a span of 4 weeks was a mammoth of a task, but the challenge made it all the more exciting.
As interns, we tend to restrict ourselves to the job and project given to us, but sometimes a little curiosity and eagerness can go a long way! My curiosity led me to realize that the RFT rate (Right at first Time rate) of converting Customer Enquiry to the Material Code manually was only 54%. This is alarmingly low for a company like Welspun. Along with my project, I worked to identify the root cause and proposed a solution to improve the rate to 95%. This was highly appreciated by the department and was one of the major reasons how I got a Pre-placement Offer. When you are able go out of your way to add value to the company as an intern, it makes the experience all the more advantageous.
Four weeks is not a long time, but it gave me an insight into how one of the fastest growing company of India runs. At Welspun, perfection is valued greatly, all of the targets are met before time and the company culture is known to be one of the best! Their incredible attention to every little detail and the fact that every decision, every project and every task is done with utter excellence surprised me!
Interning at Welspun helped me broaden my perspectives regarding the textile sector and manufacturing companies in India. The exposure to world class technologies, products and interaction with some of the best textile engineers made the experience enriching and enjoyable!
