The DLA's activities are primarily divided into three areas: the VJTI Newsletter (VJ.News), Debates & MUNs. The Debate & Literary Arts Society, commonly known as the DLA, is a VJTI student organization under the Humanities & Management Department. The DLA's activities are primarily divided into three areas: the VJTI Newsletter (VJ.News), Debates & MUNs.
Besides these, the DLA also organizes regular seminars and lectures on Economics, Literature, Creative Writing, etc. The DLA is also responsible for most of the events organized at Pratibimb, VJTI's annual cultural festival. Through VJ.News, the official VJTI newsletter, we create a platform where students can nurture and hone their writing skills. We hope to inculcate in students a passion for reading, writing and debating which would only help them in the long run.
What Does The DLA Do?
VJ.News: It initiated the first ever official VJTI Newsletter, christened VJ.News. After receiving approval and a sanctioned budget from the Director, the DLA Committee got to work. After appointing Editors to supervise all articles and recruiting some enthusiastic student journalists, the VJ.News Team released the first issue on March 31st, 2010.
FY Inter-Department Debate: At the start of the academic year 2010-2011, the DLA organized an Inter-Department Debate for VJTI's new batch of students. Judged by a panel of professors, an award for Best Speaker, and certificates for the winners and runners-up, this too was a resounding success.
VJ MUN: At Pratibimb '10, the 'VJ MUN', organized by the DLA, was a phenomenal success. This was followed by an even better VJ MUN at Pratibimb '11 with participants from IIT-B, ICT Mumbai, DJ Sanghvi, etc.
Creative Writing Seminar: In April '10, the DLA conducted an interactive Creative Writing seminar which was attended by students as well as faculty members.
Sponsorship Team: In 2010-2011, the DLA Committee needed increased funding to sustain its activities throughout the year. Hence the first ever Sponsorship Team was established.
Our Plans for the Future:
MUN Club: The DLA plans to kick off a fully functioning MUN Club, whereby members will be able to participate in MUNs not only at VJTI, but at other colleges in the country as well.
Participation In National Festivals/Competitions: The Society will represent VJTI at all Inter-College festivals involving Debates, MUNs, Literature, etc. All members can also approach us for guidance for competitions that they wish to participate in.
Inter-College Debate & Quiz Competitions: In the upcoming academic year(s), the DLA plans to take its Inter-Dept. competition one step further by scheduling debates with other colleges in Mumbai. Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), St. Xavier's College, IIT-B to name a few.
Quiz Club: As most students enjoy attending quiz competitions, the DLA hopes to set up a permanent Quiz Club with regular competitions throughout the year.
Regular Updates, Functioning Website: Once the DLA increased its projects, we realized the need for a regularly updated website and posts via SMS, to keep members informed. DLA Committee members manage this website, and all new members are automatically added to our Mailing and SMS service provider lists.
If you wish to manage, organize or participate in any of the above mentioned projects, then all you have to do is contact us. Besides, if you just want to add a whole new dimension to your engineering college experience, then the DLA is the place for you.
